"Two of the main projects for funding over the last two years has been the expansion of the accident and emergency department and the upgrade of St. Michael’s Ward and St. John’s Oncology ward and continuing or funding to the National Children’s Research Centre – see www.cmrf.org for more info.
The Emergency Department (ED) can be a daunting place for any child or parent. Often it is the first point of contact for the child with our hospital. They can be distressed and frightened so for doctors and nurses the important thing is to assure the family and to deal with the child as quickly as is possible. The Children’s Medical & Research Foundation with the support of its donors have made the ED experience less daunting for our young patients to ensure the provision of exceptional care.
Now we are proud to say that thanks to you and other generous donors across the country a €1.6 plan is now complete to create additional space which will be used as further clinical/ short term observational type space whereby the treatment or period of observation would not exceed 6 hours. Patients who they anticipate will not have completed their treatment in this time frame will be booked for inpatient admission as normal.
The additional space will also allow the hospital to pilot and introduce other work practices, currently being used elsewhere in the world. These changes will enhance the quality of care that a sick child receives in the Emergency Department, to decrease our waiting times e.g. Team triage/ Rapid assessment while also improving the working conditions and experience of Crumlin’s dedicated staff.
The final new extension will include the following:
- 5 extra assessment/treatment rooms (total 14) and a dedicated area for the efficient management of patients with ‘minor’ injuries and illness
- Increased office spaces (1 consultant, 1 nursing,1 secretarial)
- Large staff room
- Toilet/shower/locker area
- Cleaner store room
- Conference room to allow departmental meetings and education"
Our Target this year is to raise €6,000. Check out our Tournament mini-site to see how you can take part on October 30th and help Crumlin Children's Hospital and The Children’s Medical & Research Foundation.
